FAQs and Useful Links
Q: Do I need a TV Licence?
A: It is a legal requirement that anyone using a TV receiver must have a licence. This includes the use of set top boxes or PCs with broadcast cards. Licences cover the residence, not the television so if you have bought one with you from home it will not be covered. You are strongly advised to purchase a television licence as soon as possible on arrival at your residence as failiure to do this is a criminal offence. You may be entitled to a refund if you are moving back home for the summer as long as you still have 3 full calendar months left on the licence. Please visit the TV Licencing website for further information or contact TV Licensing on 0300 790 6071.
Q: Can I vote in the local elections while at University residences?
A: If you want to vote in a local election you are required to register on the local Electoral Roll. Registration forms are available by contacting you local council offices.
Q: Can I use electrical appliances from overseas in my accommodation?
A: In the UK, main electricity voltage is normally 230v. Most countries including the Americas and Japan are around 110-120v. When you use an applicance designed for lower voltages in the UK you risk causing a fire or getting electrocuted. You shouldn't bring these items with you but if you do, you must not be connected to the main electricity supply. The voltage that an appliance requires will be included in its instruction book and the information label on the item. Check carefully, and if you cannot find the information, do not use the appliance. Voltage converters are available but are also quite risky and are considered a fire risk. You are also advised against using these.

A: You must first try and discuss the problem with your flat mate. If this is not possible have a chat with a member of the accommodation staff.
Q: If I am struggling to pay my rent, what can I do?
A: In the first instance, speak to your rents team, the problem won't go away but they may be able to help with budgeting or payment plans.
Q: One of my new flatmates is homesick. How can I help?
A: Encourage your flat mate to socialise in the kitchen area or encourage them to join a university club or find a hobby. You may also wish to speak to a member of the student support team at your University.
